## Percent

The word percent is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase ‘per centum’ which means per hundred or hundredths.

Thus, the term percent means per hundred or for every hundred.

By a certain percent we mean that many hundredths.

When we say that a man gives 30 percent of his income as income tax. This means that he pays Rs 30 out of every hundred rupees of his income as income tax.

The symbol % is used for the term percent.

## Percent As A Fraction

We have, 25% = 25 hundredths = \(\frac{ 25 }{ 100 }\)

Thus, a fraction with its denominator 100 is equal to that percent as is the numerator.

8 12 135 –

So, \(\frac{ 4 }{ 100 }\) = 4%, \(\frac{ 10 }{ 100 }\) = 10%, \(\frac{ 125 }{ 100 }\) = 125%

To convert a fraction into a percent we multiply the fraction by 100 and put the percent sign%.

Thus, \(\frac{ 4 }{ 5 }\) = (\(\frac{ 4 }{ 5 }\) x 100)% = 80%;

\(\frac{ 9 }{ 20 }\) = (\(\frac{ 9 }{ 20 }\) x 100)% = 45%

To convert a percent into a fraction, we divide it by 100 and remove the percent sign %.

Therefore, 15% = \(\frac{ 15 }{ 100 }\) , 20% = \(\frac{ 20 }{ 100 }\) etc.

## Percent As A Ratio

A percent can be expressed as a ratio with its second term 100 and first term equal to the given percent.

For example, 8% = \(\frac{ 8 }{ 100 }\) = 8 : 100; 36%= \(\frac{ 36 }{ 100 }\) = \(\frac{ 9 }{ 25 }\) = 9 : 25

In order to convert a given ratio into a percent, we first convert the given ratio into the fraction and then multiply the fraction obtained by 100.

Thus, 6 : 5 = \(\frac{ 6 }{ 5 }\) = (\(\frac{ 6 }{ 5 }\) x 100)% = 120% and, 3:12 = \(\frac{ 3 }{ 12 }\) = (\(\frac{ 3 }{ 12 }\) x 100 )% = 25%.

To convert a given percent into a ratio, we first convert the percent into a fraction and then express it as a ratio.

For example,36%= \(\frac{ 36 }{ 100 }\) = \(\frac{ 9 }{ 25 }\) = 9 : 25

## Percent In Decimal Form

To convert a given percent in decimal form, we express it as a fraction with denominator as 100 and then the fraction is written in decimal form.

For example, 55% = \(\frac{ 55 }{ 100 }\) = 0.55, 7.6% = \(\frac{ 7.6 }{ 100 }\) = 0.076

In order to convert a given decimal into a percent, we move the decimal point on the right side by two digits and put the percent sign %.

For example, 0.124 = 12.4%, 0.265 = 26.5%, 0.036 = 3.6%.
